Massachusetts beaches range from fresh-water lakes in the western mountains to the sandy flats of Cape Cod Bay and the towering bluffs of Martha's Vineyard. There's a perfect beach for everyone from small children playing in quiet tide pools to surfers riding pounding waves. Lodging for families, singles, and romantic couples is easy to find for a beach vacation in Massachusetts.
The Commonwealth of Massachusetts manages a variety of beaches, from 15 saltwater ocean beaches to more than 50 inland, fresh-water beaches. Most are open between Memorial Day and Labor Day; many offer lifeguard services. Hours vary. Parking fees range from $5-15 (for residents at scenic and historic sites) to $20-40 per day (for non-residents at ocean beaches). An annual pass is $60 for residents only. Marconi Beach (Cape Cod National Seashore)

Here, the outer beach is famous for its steep sand cliff located behind it. The uplands above the beach slope gradually westward, and provide a graceful vista of both the bay and sea horizons. Restrooms and bathhouse open seasonally. Watch for bicyclists along Route 6, and where the bicycle trail crosses the Marconi area entrance road. Herring Cove (Cape Cod National Seashore)

End of Route 6 Provincetown, MA 02657 508-771-2144 Part of the Province Lands of the Cape Cod National Seashore. One mile from Provincetown. This portion of the Cape is building as a result of movement of sand from the glacial scarps to the south. The shoreline here drops off dramatically, allowing whales (and vessels) to come close inshore. Beautiful sand, gentle surf, fantastic sunsets. Life guards on duty; restrooms in season (not in winter); food; wheelchair accessible. Bonfires are allowed with a permit from the national seashore. Crane Beach
Argilla Road Ipswich, MA 01938 978-356-4354 The four miles of white sand of Crane Beach form one of the most picturesque swimming beaches in all of New England, and is also among the world's most important nesting sites for the threatened piping plover. Rustic elevated boardwalks protect an extensive dune habitat complex. In-season visitors will find lifeguards and rangers, bathhouses with toilets and changing areas, outside showers, picnic tables, bicycle racks, the Crane Beach Store, and water fountains. Wasque
Wasque Road Edgartown (Chappaquiddick Island, near the island of Martha's Vineyard), MA 02539 508-627-7689 One-half mile of over-sand vehicle trails and 4.5 miles of walking trails and sandy roads in upland area. Bird watchers can observe many species, including ospreys. Facilities include public restrooms, picnic tables, bike rack, soda machine at Wasque Gatehouse. Mid-June to Labor Day. Ocean beach with high dunes, big waves, big wind, chilly water. Must walk down steep dune to reach the beach. Popular beach bar nearby.

Life guards, restrooms, snack bar. There is a popular beachside restaurant, The Beachcomber, adjacent to this beach. You have to walk down a very steep dune to get to the beach below. May be difficult for oldest and youngest visitors.

Chatham Lighthouse Beach
Close to downtown; lighthouse; limited parking
Shore Road Chatham, MA 508-945-5100 This beach has cool waters and tricky currents and a historic lighthouse. Huge stretch of sand with beautiful views and seal activity. It is best to walk to the beach from town (a short distance), or to ride bicycles or take a shuttle bus from town. No bathrooms, lifeguards or food service. Flagpoles at the top of the stairs warn the public of dangerous conditions. The red flag means swimming is prohibited.
To park along the Bridge Street road shoulder, nonresidents and non-taxpayers of Chatham must purchase a Chatham Beach pass and display on their vehicle. White Crest Beach
Ocean beach; water is cooler and rough; surfing allowed outside swim areas; hang gliding
Ocean View Drive Wellfleet, MA This beach, operated by the town of Wellfleet, is on the ocean side of Cape Cod, meaning that the water will be colder and rougher than on the Cape Cod Bay side. Ocean beaches offer opportunities for body and board surfing, boogie boards, and swimming. Surfing is permitted at town beaches outside of swimming areas. Hang gliders are restricted to White Crest Beach, and are allowed only before 9 a.m. and after 5 p.m.

High Head Beach

Aquinnah Beach (also known as Moshup Beach or Gay Head Beach)
Off Moshup Trail Aquinnah (on the island of Martha's Vineyard), MA 02535 Surf beach off Moshup Trail. The beach is approximately a ten-minute walk from the parking lot on a cleared trail. There is a $15 parking fee in summer. Climbing on cliffs is not allowed.

Race Point Road Provincetown, MA Race Point Beach, one of the Cape Cod National Seashore beaches in Provincetown, is at the very tip of Cape Cod. Vistas around the point and of the Coast Guard station are magnificent. The ocean waves here can be big and rough, with a strong undertow. Weaker swimmers should stay in the shallow areas. Surfing allowed past protected area. Northern locations makes it great for sunbathing -- with nearly full sun all day. There are dunes behind the beach and easy access to bike trails. end of Atlantic Street Gloucester, MA This beautiful beach faces Annisquam River and Ipswich Bay. A very long sandbar is exposed at low tide, offering gorgeous views and many walks among many tide pools and neighborhoods of aquatic life. Water is a bit shallow, so it’s warmer than you might expect. The walk from the parking lot is short and easy. Food, drinks, beach toys, and other beach necessities are sold at the concession stand. Restrooms and showers are available, daily, 9 a.m.-6 p.m. The beach is handicapped accessible and a beach wheelchair is available.
Lifeguards are on duty from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day, daily from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. daily. Surfing, inflatable objects and all flotation devices are prohibited during the day. Alcohol is prohibited. Carry In-Carry Out policy requests visitors to remove their own trash.
Parking: $30 per vehicle and on the weekends and $35 per vehicle on holidays. Fees may be reduced after Labor Day. Lot has handicap parking spaces.

Parking is very limited and there are no restrooms. Porta–Potties are available a short distance away on the boulevard. Alcohol is prohibited and the beach is not guarded.
Pavilion Beach is also the home of the famous Greasy Pole Challenge and a blessing of the fleet held during the world-renowned St. Peter’s Fiesta celebrated each June to honor the patron saint of fishermen. (It was postponed in 2020 because of COVID-19.), St. Peter.
Directions: Take Route 128 North into Gloucester. At Exit 12, take the first right off of the rotary onto Washington Street. In 1 mile, Washington Street becomes Middle Street. Take the first left on to Angle Street and then right onto Commercial Street. Turn left to stay on Commercial Street. Pavilion Beach will be on the right.

120 Dorchester St. Quincy, MA 02205 617-376-1251 Nickerson Beach is a very small beach which primarily serves the adjacent Squantum residential neighborhood of Quincy. This scenic coastal area, with its extensive salt marsh and mudflats, is attractive to birds and for bird watching. Owned by the City of Quincy. Access: Most access is by foot or bicycle, although limited curbside parking is available. The area is also accessible via public transportation. Take the Squantum #211 bus to the Bellevue Road & Dorchester Street stop from the MBTA Red Line's North Quincy station.

Off Route 127A (Thatcher Road) to Long Beach Road Gloucester and Rockport, MA Beach is long, flat and sandy with a easterly view that includes the two lighthouses on Thatcher's Island. Beach crosses the border of Gloucester and Rockport. From Gloucester, go past Good Harbor Beach to the fork at Rockport Road. Near here are some small private paid parking lots a short walk near the beach. There is no public parking on the Gloucester end. From Rockport, take Route 127A to Seaview Street and the parking lot there. Rockport beach sticker is required here. Beach has life guards.

Next to Dutcher’s Dock, Menemsha Harbor Chilmark (on Martha's Vineyard), MA Has a nice sandy beach on the North side of Martha's Vineyard. There is limited public parking, and public restrooms with showers. There is gas and fuel available for both car and marine use. The harbormaster's office, a small market, shops, a couple of fishmarkets, fishing shacks, thriving fishing charters, restaurants, deli and transient boat docking make Menemsha a popular summer destination.

Starbuck’s Neck Road, off North Water Street Edgartown (on Martha's Vineyard), MA A lovely spot with calm water and scenes of sailboats, the Chappy ferry, and fishing boats. Gentle waves on the outer part of the beach are safer for small children. Seldom crowded and a short walk from North Water Street. Just a short distance from downtown, offers pleasant swimming conditions and a view of the harbor and lighthouse. Take North Water Street to Starbuck's Neck.

There is some sand but the currents are very strong with lots of boat traffic and there are no lifeguards or restrooms. Coskata-Coatue Wildlife Refuge
Wauwinet Road Wauwinet (on the island of Nantucket), MA 02554 508-228-5646 Coskata-Coatue Wildlife Refuge is known for its historic lighthouse, white sand beaches, and world-class fishing. Rolling maritime dunes cover more than 200 acres. Refuge includes 16 miles of over-sand vehicle and walking trails and beach front. Gray and harbor seals feed in the Great Point riptide. Facilities include public restrooms between the Wauwinet Gatehouse and Great Point Lighthouse and at the lighthouse. Both are open May 1 to October 31. Bike rack at the Wauwinet Gatehouse. Seasonal tours of the Great Point Lighthouse and the natural wonders of the refuge. Hours: Year-round, daily, 24 hours (10 p.m.-5 a.m. - fishing access only). The nearby Shirley Avenue Commercial District features delicious food from around the world and the neighborhood is also home to an important if unassuming cultural hub for the region’s Cambodian and Buddhist population. Hummock, on the beach's northern end, is a mixture of woodland trails and open marshland. The site has views of Quincy Bay and 144-acre Squantum Marsh. Off Uncle Venie’s Road Harwich, MA 508-430-7513 On Nantucket Sound Beach, this is the largest beach in Harwich with lifeguards and bathrooms. Food is from an ice cream truck that visits often. Good beach for kayakers, sailors, and fishermen who want easy access to Monomoy Island and its refuge.

Norton Point
end of Katama Road Edgartown (on Martha's Vineyard), MA 508-627-7689 This 2.5-mile-long strip of sand and dunes linked Martha's Vineyard and the island of Chappaquiddick until 2007, when a storm breached in the barrier beach. This beach provides opportunities for shellfishing, swimming, bird watching, and picnicking. In the autumn, the sandflats are used by migrating shorebirds. There are 1.8 miles of oversand-vehicle trails and 4.5 miles of walking trails and sandy roads in the upland area.
Due to strong currents and riptides, swimming at Norton Point Beach can be hazardous. Use caution at all times. The breach can be particularly dangerous. Stay at least 10 feet away from the edge of the breach and obey all posted signs.

Oak Bluffs Town Beach
Oak Bluffs (on Martha's Vineyard), MA 02557 Calm, shallow water. The beach begins near the Steamship Authority dock and terminates at the first jetty heading toward Edgartown, at the end of the breakwater, marked by a fence. The beach continues again about one mile southeast of the small inlet flowing into Sengekontacket Pond, and ends at Joseph Sylvia State Beach. Open to all.

Chappaquiddick Road Chappaquiddick (adjacent to the island of Martha's Vineyard), MA 02539 Just across the harbor from Edgartown is a small beach with 705 feet of sand and splendid views of the harbor on Chappaquiddick. There are two beaches; one faces the inner harbor, the other looks out toward the outer harbor and Nantucket Sound. Both offer small lapping waves. Not suitable for swimming due to harbor traffic. Take the Chappaquiddick ferry to gain access to the beach.
Squibnocket Beach
Squibnocket Road Martha's Vineyard, MA Squibnocket faces the Atlantic and is known for heavy surf. In fact, it may have the most consistently powerful surf of all the Martha's Vineyard beaches. A well-established local surf spot, the beach if fairly rocky. A Town of Chilmark residential permit is required here for beach access during the summer season. No public parking is available. Directions: Located in Chlmark, Squibnocket is accessible via seasonal shuttle bus service.
